Cane Garden Bay snorkeling - fun and relax for you and your family
Experienced snorkelers will find plenty of adventure on most of the beaches in Tortola. Smuggler's Cove and Cane Garden Bay on the North coast are some of the best snorkel areas in the Caribbean. For beginners, several boats in Tortola specialize in snorkeling tours. THE INDIANS - When viewed after copious quantities of rum punch, the four rocks protruding from the sea near Norman Island are said to resemble an indian headress. From your sober perspective, you may disagree with the analogy, but you will agree it is a wonderful dive. Descending from waist deep water to about 60' (20m) the Indians are home to a variety of dive experiences. There is beautiful coral and innumerable species of reef fish. A small cavern is fun to play in and the tunnel makes for a colourful pass through. The sheer cliff walls of the rockface are draped with an incredible variety of marine lifeforms. This is also an excellent location for the non-divers in your group to try snorkeling. A 40-45 minute boat ride takes you from Road Town to Cistern Point off Cooper Island. On the sea bed you can often see Southern stingrays. Hawksbill turtles eat the sea grass nearby. Through the vertical water column we will see an abundance of Sergeant Majors and Yellowtail Snapper. The sloping wall is strewn with large rocks under which hide Lobster, Grouper and Squirrelfish. A 15 minute ride takes you to the famous wreck of the RMS Rhone. This is a ship that sank in 1867 in a fierce hurricane. Snorkel the stern section of the ship that was torn in two by Black rock (locally known as the can opener). The rudder post comes within 15 feet of the surface and below that is the 17 foot bronze propeller. You are also able to see the cargo deck, propeller shaft, mid shaft bearing and gearbox. Surrounding all this, is of course a spectacular reef system full of wreck loving fish. If the weather is too rough to visit the wreck of the Rhone, an alternative site is Blue Chromis a very colorful reef at Haulover Bay on Cooper Island. It is named Blue Chromis for the abundance of these electric blue fish that are a delight to watch as they eat the Pistol Shrimp you can hear popping in your ears, but are too small to see. The reef is also host to Spotted moray eels, Four Eyed Butterfly fish, and schools of French Grunts.
